Sales Tax Information

Last Updated: June 5, 2026

Yellow Rock Coin & Bullion collects sales tax where required by applicable state and local law. Sales tax rules for precious metals, bullion, coins, rounds, bars, numismatic products, accessories, and related items vary by state and may depend on product type, order amount, metal content, legal tender status, delivery address, or other factors.

Sales tax is calculated based on the shipping address provided at checkout. If sales tax applies to your order, it will be shown before payment is submitted.

The tax amount shown at checkout controls the order. The information on this page is provided as a general reference for customers and may not reflect every local tax rule, special district tax, product classification, exemption threshold, or recent legal change.

Why Sales Tax May Apply

In 2018, the United States Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. allowed states to require certain out-of-state online sellers to collect and remit sales tax based on where an order is delivered. As a result, online precious metals dealers must follow different state and local sales tax rules across the United States.

Because these rules are not uniform, an item that is exempt in one state may be taxable in another. Some states exempt qualifying bullion entirely, some apply minimum order thresholds, some tax collectible or numismatic items differently than investment-grade bullion, and some impose tax on accessories or non-bullion products even when bullion itself is exempt.

Examples

Example 1:
A customer places an order for qualifying silver bullion and ships it to a state that exempts qualifying precious metals. In that case, sales tax may not be collected on the qualifying bullion portion of the order.

Example 2:
A customer places an order below a state exemption threshold. If that state only exempts precious metals above a certain purchase amount, sales tax may apply to the order.

Example 3:
A customer buys coin capsules, supplies, jewelry, display items, or other accessories. These products may be taxable even if bullion coins or bars are exempt in the same state.

Important Notes

  • Sales tax is based on the shipping destination, not the customer’s billing address.
  • State and local tax rules can change at any time.
  • Local city, county, parish, district, or special tax rates may apply in addition to state tax.
  • Certain products may be treated differently depending on purity, metal content, legal tender status, collectible value, or product category.
  • Bullion, legal tender coins, collectible coins, graded coins, paper currency, jewelry, accessories, capsules, supplies, books, and display items may be treated differently for tax purposes.
  • Minimum order thresholds may apply in certain states before an exemption is available.
  • Yellow Rock may update tax collection settings as laws, processor rules, tax software rules, or marketplace requirements change.
  • Customers are responsible for any tax obligations not collected at checkout, including use tax, reporting obligations, or tax treatment specific to their jurisdiction.

State-by-State Precious Metals Sales Tax Reference

This chart is provided as a general reference only and is modeled after the common bullion-industry format used by major precious metals dealers. It is not tax, legal, or accounting advice. Actual tax treatment is determined at checkout based on the shipping address, product type, order amount, current tax rules, tax software settings, and applicable state and local requirements.

Where the chart says “qualifying bullion,” the exemption may depend on the product meeting that state’s current requirements. Non-qualifying products may still be taxable.

Exemptions generally cannot be applied retroactively after an order has been completed unless required by law.
